An Interview with Shigeru Umebayashi
Monday, 21 February 2005
interviewed by George Christopoulos
Were the extra tracks
that were used in this film (2046) like “Julien & Barbara” by
Georges Delerue, the “Decision” by Zbigniew Preisner or even the
part of “Casta Diva” opera by Angela Gheorghiu and the song “Siboney”,
were your choices or it was a brainstorming result between you, Peer
Raben and the director? How come you concluded to these tracks?
It was all the director’s selection. Honestly, I want to ask to Kar-Wai
the same question as you, too.
So, how was the cooperation with Kar-Wai and Zhang Yimou. How
different were they in those projects you worked with?
I know Kar-Wai since a long time ago, and I was introduced Yimou by
Producer Bill Kong (Hero, Crouching Tiger etc.) with whom I worked
before. Wong Kar-Wai, shoots the film based on the music generally.
Zhang Yimou, he puts the music after the shooting has been finished.
How does your inspiration react for each movie you are
assigned? Do film directors and scriptwriters convey to you what
exactly they want from you and to which point do they influence you?
I feel the film that both Kar-Wai and Yimou directed were so
beautiful and mysterious in visual parts. Both of them told me to
compose the music freely. It was very appreciated by me.
The score you composed for the “House of Flying Daggers” has
naturally Asian musical approach in mood and style. But in general
do you think that your scores were always, even in a slight
percentage, influenced by Asian traditional music?
Though I was not conscious it, “HOFD” needs the Asian musical
approach indeed. However, I believe the score is not quite similar
to other Chinese films and that because I’m a Japanese. But even if
I made a very Greek music, with influence from Greece, it should be
impressed some Asian taste in it. It is very important for me to
create my music.
It was a surprise to watch the actress Zhang Ziyi singing in
“House of Flying Daggers” film. Do you think that she could even
become a professional singer one day?
She is talented. It is up to her.
Which of the films for which you have composed music you like
the most? Which one is closer to your aesthetics and taste as a
viewer?
I have my favorite music in every film that I joined. It is very
hard to say.
Are there any projects you are working on right now or that
you will work in the near future?
Now I’m working for an Italian film and a Japanese TV program.
Is there a kind of films for which you have not composed music
and for which you would really like to compose?
Yes, Comedy.
